White Sands National Monument, NM

Our featured hotspot is "White Sands National Monument" located in south-central New Mexico.    Start at the Historic Visitors Center.  This adobe mud brick building was completed in 1938.  It is a remarkable example of Spanish pueblo-adobe architecture.  The visitors center consists of an information desk, orientation video, museum, book store, gift shop and restrooms.  From here, drive the 8 mile scenic "Dunes Drive" into the heart of the dunes.  You will find yourself in the center of the "Tularosa Basin".  This 275 square miles of desert is the world's largest gypsum dune field.  It ranges in elevation from 3890' to 4116' above sea level.  115 square miles of dune fields are actually located within "White Sands National Monument".  Visit www.nps.gov/whsa for more information.
