Hiking tips:

  • Plan your hike.  Obtain trail maps or brochures.

  • Calculate trail distance and estimated time required.

  • Check weather conditions before starting out.

  • Acquire permits before your hike if required.

  • Wear appropriate hiking shoes.

  • Dress accordingly and dress in layers.

  • Pack a lightweight jacket.  Weather conditions can change suddenly.

  • Always hike with a friend, never hike alone.

  • Tell someone of your plans and when you expect to return.

  • Take more than enough water.  Stay hydrated.

  • Pack lunch, snacks and energy bars.

  • Don’t over pack your backpack.  Keep your backpack as light as possible.

  • Consider investing in a GPS if you plan on hiking a lot.

  • Start hiking early so you can take your time, enjoy your hike and return before dark.

  • Pace yourself and don’t wear yourself out.

  • Hiking sticks are helpful for going up or down slopes.

  • Stay on marked trails.

  • Be considerate of others on the trail or path.

  • Never approach or feed wild animals.  They are unpredictable and can be territorial.

  • Keep an eye out for snakes, spiders and other poisons creatures.

  • Bring a whistle for emergencies or warding off wild animals if need be.

  • If crossing private property, get permission first from the owners.

  • Leave gates as you find them.

  • Always carry out what you carry in.

  • Keep America Beautiful!  Don't be a liter bug.
